The former right-hand man of Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders has announced that he converted to Islam, reports Dutch media on Tuesday.

Joram Van Klaveren is known for leading for years a fierce battle against Islam in the lower house of the Dutch Parliament, for PVV leader Geert Wilders, wrote AFP.

While writing an anti-Islamic book, Joram Van Klaveren, 40, changed his mind and decided to convert to Islam.

«I thought: if everything I have written so far is correct, if I believe all that, then I am de facto a Muslim», he told local newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

The far-right politician, who grew up in orthodox Christian family, said he was seeking religious conviction for a «long time». «It felt a bit like coming home, in a religious sense», he said.

In 2014, he ended his collaboration with Geert Wilders' party after the controversial comments of the PVV leader that targeted Moroccans. Wilders was found guilty of discriminating against Moroccans.
