Morocco's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Hilale, was elected by acclamation on Monday as Chairman of the UN Information Committee for two years.
Speaking at the opening of the Committee's session, Hilale stressed that the dissemination and media coverage of the activities by the United Nations is becoming more and more important.
«In the age of globalization, where information has witnessed an unprecedented development, the need for reliable, neutral and objective information is has become a pressing need, especially when it comes from the United Nations», he said, welcoming the fact that the United Nations enjoys «a commendable aura, legitimacy and credibility».
«Indeed, the United Nations is expected to provide exemplary communication on important and sensitive issues. On the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we welcome the concrete and innovative actions that have been planned to support the achievement of the SDGs», he said.
The UN Information Committee is tasked mainly with promoting the establishment of a new, more just and more effective world information and communication order intended to strengthen peace and international understanding and based on the free circulation and wider and better-balanced dissemination of information.
