The Polisario Front has launched a fundraising appeal for the construction of a mosque in Amhereez, located east of Morocco’s defense wall, pro-Polisario news outlet Futuro Sahara reported on Sunday.

This new project is an attempt to «build facilities in the liberated area», the same source stressed, referring to Amhereez. This announcement comes as the Polisario Front conducted a military exercise in Tifariti, an area located east of the Moroccan Berm.

The military exercise was attended by the Polisario leader Brahim Ghali, days after the UN Security Council adopted a new resolution (2468) on the Western Sahara conflict.

In January, the Front organized another military drill in Amhereez. The move was denounced by the Moroccan government, which informed the United Nations about it. At the time, the government's spokesperson Mustapha El Khalfi stressed that the Polisario’s military exercise violated the 1991 cease-fire, quoting UN resolutions on the conflict.

Indeed, in resolution 2414 adopted in April, the UN Security Council expressed «concern with the presence of the Polisario Front in the buffer strip in Guerguerate and called for its immediate withdrawal».

It also expressed concern «regarding the Polisario Front’s announcement of the planned relocation of administrative functions to Bir Lahlou, and calls for the Polisario Front to refrain from any such destabilizing actions».

In resolution (2440) adopted by the UN, the Security Council urged the Polisario Front to «fully adhere to its commitments to the Personal Envoy with respect to Bir Lahlou, Tifariti, and the buffer strip at Guerguerate».
