The Battalion forming the Moroccan contingent deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was decorated, at a ceremony held Tuesday in Kananga, with medals of merit by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) for its commendable services within the mission, according to the Moroccan embassy in Kinshasa.
«At a medal ceremony held today in Kananga by the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), the Battalion forming the Moroccan contingent deployed in the DRC, under the command of Colonel Zakaria Sahili, was decorated by Lieutenant General Elias Rodrigues Martins Filho, Commander of the MONUSCO Forces, for the commendable services rendered by Moroccan elements within this UN Mission», said the embassy in a statement.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Moroccan ambassador in Kinshasa, Rachid Agassim, accompanied by the Naval and Air Force Military Attaché, Colonel Zine Hrizou.
The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Head of the MONUSCO Office, Representatives of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as several officers and representatives from other countries.
On this occasion, the Brazilian General Commander of the MONUSCO Forces praised the Moroccan contingent and its contribution to peacekeeping and the protection of civilians.
He also highlighted the contribution of the Kingdom of Morocco to the various peacekeeping missions in the DRC since the 1960s.
The Kingdom of Morocco is actively contributing to MONUSCO, with a contingent of more than 1,300 elements deployed in the DRC, notably in Kasai and Bunia in North Kivu. The Moroccan forces have been reinforced by the female element (25 female elements in Kananga, including five officers).
