The Filipino worker who died after falling from a building in Casablanca was a victim of human trafficking, Philippines’ Chargé d’Affaires in Tripoli Elmer Cato said Tuesday.

According to Philippine Daily Inquirer, the 49-year-old worker «was recruited in the Philippines for a job in Dubai but ended in Morocco instead», the diplomat said on Twitter.

Speaking to the same newspaper, Cato said that the husband of the deceased was informed about what happened to his wife. The diplomat indicated that the victim is a mother of a three-year-old boy.

For the record, the worker was severely injured after jumping form an apartment building, Saturday. She succumbed to her wounds shortly after.

In a communiqué, Philippines embassy in Libya, which has jurisdiction over Morocco, said that the worker «had an argument with her employer and tried to flee the building using pieces of garments she tied together».

An investigation was opened by the Moroccan authorities and the employer have been taken into custody, the statement said.

A Filipino team has been sent to Casablanca to coordinate with the Moroccan authorities and repatriate the body of the victim, the same communiqué concluded.
