Hirak activist Rabii Al Ablak was admitted to a prison clinic in Tangier after a seven-week hunger strike, his brother and lawyer, quoted by Reuters, said on Friday.

Sentenced to five years in jail in June 2018 for «spreading fake news and reporting as a journalist without a permit» following the Rif Hirak, «he was admitted yesterday night to the prison's clinic after his health deteriorated», his brother Abdellatif said. «He couldn't even walk when the lawyer came to visit him this morning» he added, calling for immediate action to save his life.

His lawyer Souad Brahma assured that Al Ablak lost a lot of weight and was «unable to stand».

The General Administration of Prison and Rehabilitation Administration (DGAPR) explained in a press release that Al Ablak had never informed them that he was on a hunger strike and that his daily activities showed that «his health condition is normal».

Rabii Al Ablak «is refusing to eat because of the conditions of his detention and demands to be released», Aziz Ghali, president of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH), quoted by Reuters, said, adding that «the prison administration did not allow an AMDH doctor to visit» Al Ablak.

At the time of the Hirak protests, Rabii Al Ablak was covering the protests for news site Badil.info, whose director, Hamid El Mahdaoui, was also sentenced to three years in prison.
