Imlil murders : Death sentence confirmed for hikers' killers

Salé's Court of Appeal confirmed, Wednesday, the death sentence in first instance for the three main accused in the murder of two Scandinavian tourists in the town of Imlil.

The Court also decided to commute life imprisonment to death sentence against one of the defendants.

Hence the capital punishment was confirmed for Rachid Afatti, Younes Ouziad and Abdessamad Eljoud, while Abderrahmane Khiyali's life imprisonment in first instance was commuted to death sentence.

The Court also upheld the prison terms ranging from 5 to 30 years for the other accused and lengthened jail term for Abdesslam Idrissi from 15 to 20 years.

The suspects were standing trial over the charges of «setting up a gang to prepare and commit terrorist acts, deliberately putting the life of people in danger, possession of firearms and attempted manufacture of explosives in violation of the law, as part of a collective project aimed at seriously undermining public order».
