Morocco recorded 68 new confirmed coronavirus cases bringing to 602 the total number of Covid-19 infections in the Kingdom.

During a press briefing in Rabat, Mohamed Lyoubi, chief of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division at the Health Ministry said that 2,298 suspected cases have tested negative for the virus.

176 Covid-19 cases are located in the Casablanca-Settat region, 105 in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, 105 in Fès-Meknès, 107 in Marrakech-Safi, and 39 are in Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima. The rest is distributed among the other regions of the Kingdom with the exception of Dakhla-Oued Dahab and Laayoune-Sakia Al Hamra.

The city of Casablanca is home to the highest number of infections (169) followed by Marrakech (102 cases), Rabat (58), Meknes (49) and Fez (36 cases).

Mohamed Lyoubi said that 55% of the people who tested positive for the virus were men while 45% were women, noting that the average age is 54 years. He reported that the youngest Covid-19 patient in Morocco is a two-month old baby while the oldest is a 96 years-old person.

Regarding the health status of those infected, the numbers have not changed either: «85% of cases are mild while 15% are severe or critical», Lyoubi said.

Three deaths, ten recoveries and the list of laboratories for Covid-19 expanded

Morocco also recorded three new deaths, Tuesday, bringing the number of people killed by Covid-19 to 36. Deaths were recorded in the Casablanca-Settat region (8 deaths), Marrakech-Safi (8), Fès-Meknès (8), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (4), the Oriental region (3), Beni Mellal-Khenifra (2) Souss-Massa (2) and Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima (1 death).

Lyoubi explained that the average age for the deceased is 62 years old. The majority of them, 90%, are believed to have died due to age or chronic illnesses, or both at the same time, he added.

Also on Tuesday, Morocco recorded 10 new recoveries, bringing the number of people who have recovered from the virus to 24 cases. «Healing in Morocco is subject to defined and delicate procedures», said Mohamed Lyoubi.

«You cannot declare a person cured as soon as their condition improves. For us, and for general health security, we only declare a person cured after two negative laboratory tests».

The official also recalled that, in accordance with the national strategy of the Ministry of Health, the latter continues to monitor people who have been in contact with positive test cases. «So far, 4,980 people who have been in contact with a confirmed case have been monitored», he said.

Mohamed Lyoubi also acknowledged, by evoking the means of detection, that the Kingdom is moving towards the enlargement of the laboratories that can screen for Covid-19. «We are still in phase II and we are ensuring the precise diagnosis, with cutting-edge technologists, by detecting the DNA of the virus. But we will later adopt other means of screening», he concluded.
