Police in Casablanca arrested Tuesday afternoon in Casablanca a salesman who works for a private company for hate speech and spreading fake news.

The 35-year-old man had posted fake news on social media regarding the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Morocco, claiming that thousands of Moroccans have been infected with the virus in several cities, National Security (DGSN) said in a statement.

The suspect also falsely accused a Moroccan citizen of Jewish faith and a foreign national of Arab origin to be directly responsible for the infection of a large number of people, the source added.

Investigations led to the arrest of the suspect who was placed on custody, while investigations are underway by the competent public prosecutor's office.
