More than 4,835 people have been prosecuted in Morocco for breaching the state of health emergency, the public prosecutor has said. 334 of these people were arrested and brought to justice.

Since public authorities announced the health emergency on March 20 and until March 23, 263 other people have been prosecuted, including 43 in detention, for breaking the penal code, thus bringing the total number of people prosecuted in this regard to 5,098, it said.

Moroccan courts have handed down prison terms and fined some of the accused, the statement added.

Moreover, and as part of the fight against fake news, the prosecution opened 81 judicial inquiries that led to the prosecution of 58 people.

Given its role in the preservation of public order and the security of citizens, the public prosecutor underlines that it will enforce law against all offenders who endanger the life and the security of citizens.
