Morocco's capacity for Covid-19 testing will be expanded according to a specific strategy in order to prepare for lifting the lockdown and reduce waiting time for test results, said Tuesday minister of health, Khalid Ait Taleb.

The minister, who was speaking at the House of Advisors (upper house), said the expansion of the nation's capacity for Covid-19 testing will help identify people who have acquired immunity after recovery as well as infected people, stressing the need to carry on implementing health emergency measures on the basis of the spread of the virus.

He underscored, in this regard, the need for for vigilance, «because the epidemic can get worse». «Health emergency rules must continue, until the situation becomes reassuring», he insisted.

In this regard, he said, the important indicator that provides data about the rapid spread of the epidemic and the possibility of infection from one person to several people was on the rise but has now begun to shrink, and this indicates, according to Ait Talib, that the epidemic is under control. «But that does not mean that we should say that we succeeded and won the battle», he pointed out.

«We must remain vigilant because the virus can spread very quickly», the minister said.

This global pandemic varies from one region to another, he noted, adding that Morocco is in the second stage of the spread of the novel coronavirus and therefore has relied on suitability according to the available capabilities as well as to the spread of the virus at the local level. This is the reason why the capacity for testing the disease was not expanded at the beginning, he explained, adding that the country has dealt with the pandemic in a progressive way to adapat to the WHO standards.

«Laboratory tests could have been carried out on a larger scale, but it may have reduced the country's capacity for testing», the minister said, adding that the process adapted by the country in this area has shown good results.
