A total of 315 children have recovered from Covid-19 and one child has died from coronavirus complications in Morocco since the start of the pandemic, said on Saturday head of the epidemiology department at the Ministry of Health, Mohamed El Youbi.
The 17-month-old deceased child was suffering from kidney failure, the official said at a webinar on children amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Children represent nearly 9.4% of all Covid-19 cases in the Kingdom (625 cases), he pointed out, adding that tests among children have increased while the number of cases among children has dropped.
The positivity rate among children slightly exceeds that of the rest of the population, as it reached 20.8% in March, 15.1% in April and 6.5% in May, El Youbi said.
Regarding Covid-19 patients aged under 14, 57.3% of cases do not show clinical symptoms, 39% are in mild condition, 3% in moderate condition and 0.6% in serious condition.
Symptoms among children are similar to those among adults, as they include cough, fever, headache and sore throat, he said, adding that on average the incubation period is 5 days.
Regarding the geographical spread of the virus, the region Draa-Tafilalet is the worst hit, ahead of Casablanca-Settat, Tangier-Tetouan-Hoceima and Marrakech-Safi, while no Covid-19 case was recorded among children in the regions of Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, he pointed out.
Eighty-nine new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Morocco over the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the country to 6,741, the Ministry of Health announced Saturday.
