The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has published the fourteenth edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI 2020), which ranks 163 independent states and territories in terms of peacefulness. The report produced by this Sydney-based think tank covers 99.7% of the world's population.
It is based on around twenty qualitative and quantitative indicators that measure peacefulness through three themes : the level of societal safety and security; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, and the degree of militarization.
Morocco ranks 83rd with a score of 2.057, behind Guyana and ahead of Peru, while it was ranked 90th in the 2019 edition of the same index. For the 2020 edition, Morocco seems like it climbed seven spots but in reality it only advances by one rank and its score even drops by 0.005 point, according to the report.
The Kingdom scored 1.865 for the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict, 2.398 at the level of societal safety and security and 1.727 for the degree of militarization. According to the GPI 2020, the direct and indirect economic cost of violence also represents 6% of Moroccan GDP, 1% more than last year.
MENA, the least peaceful region in the world for the 6th consecutive year
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the Kingdom is ranked sixth. The regional ranking is topped by Qatar (27th worldwide), followed by Kuwait (39th), the United Arab Emirates (41st), Oman (68th) and Jordan (72nd). As a result, Morocco comes in first place in the Maghreb, ahead of Tunisia (92nd), Algeria and Mauritania (117th ex aequo) and Libya (157th).
The report notes, however, that the MENA region has «recorded a slight deterioration in peacefulness and remained the least peaceful region, a position it has held since 2015».
However, despite the ongoing armed conflicts and instability in the region, it has registered some improvements on many indicators, the report added. Thus, «the number of deaths from internal conflict continued to fall, and the intensity of internal conflict also improved in the region». Weapons imports and exports have declined.
Overall, the GPI 2020 is topped by Iceland, New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark, the same top 5 of last year. The last five places, on the other hand, are for Yemen (159th), South Sudan, Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.
