A new medical care unit for moderate and severe cases of Covid-19 was inaugurated on Thursday at the Mohammed VI hospital in Tangier.

This unit, which was built and equipped in less than a week, includes 48 beds in individual rooms equipped with respiratory assistance material and vital signs monitors and will be dedicated to patients whose state of health requires immediate administration of oxygen.

The reception capacity of this unit will allow the health authorities to take care of recent cases of Covid-19 contamination which go to the hospitals of Tangier, said the regional director of health in Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Dr Ouafae Ajnaou, specifying that this unit is meant for patients suffering from chronic diseases and elderly people whose state of health requires intensive care.

This unit will alleviate the pressure on the intensive care units which have a capacity of 73 beds, added Dr Ajnaou, noting that the inauguration of this unit aims to free the beds of the intensive care units for the benefit of patients whose state of health requires these services.

Cases that require medical supervision will be taken care of at this unit, while serious and critical cases will be transferred to the three ICUs in Tangier, she explained.

In addition, Dr. Ajnaou said that this unit has oxygen as well as all the devices to monitor patients and take care of them in the best conditions, noting that it will be supervised by a team of doctors and nurses from the Tangier University Hospital Center (CHU).
