Nearly 54% of the total number of infections with the new coronavirus, which broke out last March, was recorded during the first 23 days of August.

Thus, until August 23, the rate of infection with the new coronavirus reached 77/100,000 people, said the coordinator of the National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations at the Ministry of Health, Mouad Mrabet, on Tuesday in the weekly statement on the epidemiological situation in the Kingdom, adding that 60% of deaths were recorded during this period.

In addition, Mrabet stressed that the total number of infections is 52,349, i.e. a cumulative incidence rate of 144 people per 100,000 and the total number of deaths 888 (i.e. a case fatality rate of 1.7%), specifying that the total number of recoveries is 36,343, that is nearly 69%.

During the week from August 17 to 23, 9,860 cases of infection were recorded, including 37 imported cases, that is a weekly rate of infection of 27 people per 100,000, the official said, highlighting the 230 deaths and 6,999 recoveries recorded during the last week.

In addition, last week saw an increase of nearly 6.6% in the number of cases of infection and 43.8% in the number of deaths, he said, adding that the cumulative incidence rate is also constantly evolving.

Addressing the active cases, the official underlined that they reached, last week, a rate of 41 people per 100,000 divided into 5 groups of regions : the eastern region with less than 10 active cases per 100,000 people, the regions of Guelmim-Oued Noun and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra between 10 and 20 active cases/100,000 people, the regions of Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Fez-Meknès, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Souss Massa and Draâ-Tafilalet (between 20 and 40 active cases/100,000 inhabitants), the regions of Béni Mellal-Khénifra and Marrakech-Safi (40 to 50 active cases/100,000 people) and the regions of Casablanca-Settat and Dakhla-Oued Dahab (more than 50 active cases/100,000 inhabitants).

Morocco ranks 49th globally and 3rd continentally in terms of the number of cases of Covid-19 infection, the coordinator said. The Kingdom ranks 5th continentally in terms of number of deaths, 31st globally and 2nd at the continental level and 1st in North Africa in terms of Covid-19 screening tests, he said.

Finally, as part of the ministry's awareness-raising messages, the official confirmed that it is important not to wear a protective mask during physical exercises, explaining that wetting the mask causes breathing difficulties and the spread of germs.
