In a fresh warning that highlights a silent crisis threatening food security and national sovereignty, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council has revealed that nearly 75 percent of Morocco’s local wheat and barley varieties have disappeared in just five decades, driven by the standardization of production methods, the spread of hybrid varieties and the intensification of agricultural exploitation.
A new study estimates that invasive alien species cost Morocco between $1.14 billion and $5.13 billion every year, with agriculture bearing the heaviest losses. Identifying 343 invasive species, the authors warn that the true cost is likely higher and call for urgent preventive action.
