French and Spanish farmers joined forces to organize a blockade on Monday, June 3. During this protest action, they set themselves up on the French-Spanish border to protest against what they consider to be unfair trade practices from Moroccan fruit and vegetable producers.
Moroccan tomato exports are outpacing local suppliers in numerous European countries. The UK now relies heavily on Morocco, which has also eclipsed Spanish producers in the market. This shift has caused friction, particularly in France and Spain.
It is more than a mere coincidence, on the day a bunch of Spanish ship-owners met to defend, in Dakhla, the renewal of the fisheries agreement, European farmers gathered in Spain to launch a campaign against the Moroccan tomatoes.
