Operational cooperation between Spain and Morocco has led to a significant reduction in irregular migration along the West African route, with a 63% decrease in monitoring operations and a 17% drop in departures from Morocco, according to an EUAA report. Meanwhile, the European Union's new unified list of «safe countries of origin» could accelerate asylum procedures for Moroccan citizens, who filed 21,000 applications in 2025.
The European Union Delegation in Morocco has issued an initial response following the European Parliament's vote on new measures concerning the management of asylum applications. On Tuesday, the European Parliament approved new measures allowing member states to return asylum seekers to third countries deemed «safe», even if the applicants are not nationals of those countries. For decades, this issue has remained unresolved in relations between the EU and Morocco.
In 2024, Moroccan asylum applications in EU+ countries dropped by 18%, with most filed in Italy, Spain, and Slovenia. Even more telling is the surge in withdrawn applications. In Slovenia alone, Moroccans accounted for over 70% of all withdrawals.
