The series of withdrawals of recognition of the self-proclaimed Polisario «Republic» continues, as the number of countries maintaining diplomatic relations with it has significantly decreased in recent years, knowing that their number exceeded 80 countries during the 1980s.
On the Sahara issue, Morocco is achieving diplomatic successes not only in Europe and South America, but also in the Caribbean. A region previously considered a Polisario stronghold, but where Morocco has almost made a clean sweep.
EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, visited Morocco to discuss EU-Morocco relations following the European Court of Justice's ruling excluding the Sahara from bilateral agreements. Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita urged the EU to take concrete actions to uphold their partnership, emphasizing Morocco's stance on national unity and territorial integrity.
As in July 2023, Algeria has reacted to the ongoing rapprochement between Morocco and Iran. Algiers fears that a normalization of relations between Rabat and Tehran, which have been severed since May 2018, would be detrimental to the Polisario.
