French energy group Engie and Morocco's OCP Group are set to deepen their strategic partnership through the creation of a joint venture, expected to be established by autumn 2026, according to Africa Intelligence.

The new entity will oversee the implementation of projects announced by the two groups during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to Morocco in October 2024. Feasibility studies launched several months ago have reportedly reached an advanced stage, paving the way for the projects to move forward in the coming months.

According to Africa Intelligence, the announcement could coincide with King Mohammed VI's expected state visit to France later this autumn.

The partnership between Engie and OCP covers several key sectors linked to the energy transition, including the development of renewable power generation, energy storage, electricity infrastructure, seawater desalination, and the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia.

The two companies formalized their alliance in Rabat in October 2024, with the aim of supporting the decarbonization of OCP, the world's leading phosphate producer, while strengthening Morocco's capacity in renewable energy and sustainable water management.

The commissioning of the Dakhla desalination plant, being developed by Engie in partnership with Nareva, is also expected around the same period, further highlighting the growing strategic cooperation between Rabat and Paris in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
