In an article published Monday, the Algerian press agency reported that Madrid and Algiers share the same opinions on the Western Sahara dispute and the Palestinian cause, quoting Spain’s ambassador to the country. On Tuesday, a Spanish diplomatic source says Algeria misinterpreted the diplomat’s words.
An African Union legal advisor has urged the continental organization to delete reference to Western Sahara in the AU Peace and Security Council’s report. The decision was neglected by the Polisario which stated that the PSC’s Commissioner commented on the territorial dispute.
In Washington, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita met with his counterpart Mike Pompeo. The two officials discussed Morocco’s efforts to «counter Iran’s malign influence». Attending the meeting of the Global Coalition to defeat ISIS, Bourita did not meet John Bolton as predicted.
In an interview broadcast on Qatari channel Al Jazeera on January the 23rd, Moroccan Foreign Minister hinted at the fact that Rabat had serious reservations about Mohammed Bin Salman's recent tour to Arab countries. On Thursday, Saudi channel Al Arabiya fired back at the Kingdom through a video on the Western Sahara conflict.
In December, John Bolton said he was frustrated that the Western Sahara conflict «has not been resolved». In January, the US National Security Advisor did not comment on the Security Council’s review of the conflict.
Recent news reports suggested that the Senegalese press agency published an article on Western Sahara that was reportedly slammed by Morocco. The agency, however, stated that the article in question dates back to 2009, all while hailing the Moroccan-Senegalese diplomatic ties.
After they won control of the US House of Representatives, Democrats have finally passed a proposal including Western Sahara in the funds granted to Morocco. The decision has been made thanks to US representative Nita M. Lowey, who is close to the Kingdom.
Unlike the Sanchez government, which supported Morocco on the January the 16th vote at the European parliament, Spanish fruit and vegetable producer organizations wants Western Sahara products to be labeled.
In a report released this week, Human Rights Watch enlisted human rights violations that took place in Morocco in 2018. According to the New York-based NGO, authorities in the Kingdom met protests with repression.
