Less than twenty-four hours before the Security Council meeting, the final U.S.-drafted resolution on the Sahara reaffirms the primacy of Morocco’s autonomy plan and delivers a stern warning to the Polisario, despite last-minute amendments.
On Tuesday, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2468, extending the mandate of MINURSO by six months. Reacting to this decision, Morocco commended, through its Foreign Minister, the new resolution while the Polisario Front expressed its disappointment.
In the Security Council’s Provisional Program of Work for April 2019, the body's fifteen members are expected to hold four meetings on the Western Sahara conflict. In Berlin, Horst Köhler is expected to meet a Polisario delegation on Monday and Tuesday.
