Morocco’s Supreme Council of Ulema dismissed the idea of amending laws related to abortion after the issue made national headlines. While supporting the findings of a royal commission's report issued in 2015, the council said that it is open to «Ijtihad».
Jailed over abortion charges, Moroccan journalist Hajar Raissouni was sentenced to one year in prison and fined alongside her fiancé. International and local activists see the case as a crackdown on journalists and individual freedoms.
