During a press briefing held in the office of the spokesperson for the UN secretary general, it has been announced that the USA has offered $1 million to the World Food Program. The fund is meant to help Sahrawi refugees in camps of the Polisario Front.
The Polisario Front announced on Monday the arrest of 19 Moroccans for smuggling and drug trafficking. Through its media outlets, the separatist movement is trying to draw attention away from the drug trafficking war that broke off earlier this month between Brahim Ghali and Mohamed Lamine Ould El Bouhali‘s gangs.
Tindouf camps are now under the control of drug trafficking groups. Two gangs engaged in a gunfight on Wednesday and people were taken hostage.
During the African Union Executive Council held on Sunday in Nigeria, Morocco confronted the Polisario’s allies regarding a visit of an African human rights mission to the Sahara. However, peace between Morocco and the front was brokered by Nigeria which allowed to lift the Moroccan reserves.
The UN has cut peacekeeping budget after being pressured by Trump's administration. On Friday the General Assembly agreed on reducing the expenses of the UN missions including the Minurso, which canceled the purchase of a new helicopter.
