The US recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is at the heart of political debate in Spain. Opposition parties and government officials in the country commented on the Trump administration's decision.

On Monday, the Spanish Foreign Minister reaffirmed her country's position on the territorial dispute. The solution to this problem «does not depend on the will or the unilateral action of a country, regardless of its size». On this issue, «the center of gravity is at the UN», said Arancha Gonzalez in an interview with Onda Cero radio.

The foreign minister said that the establishment of diplomatic relations between Arab countries and Israel did not necessarily resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Western Sahara and Palestine «are processes that depend on the UN, that is to say they need the agreement of the international community so that the solution is stable and accepted by all parties», she explained.

«What matters now is for the UN Secretary General to appoint a new Special Envoy for Western Sahara to lead the efforts to reach a solution, speaking to immediate neighbors like Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria and with the members of the Security Council as well as the group of countries, including Spain, with narrow interests».

The Minister has, moreover, underlined that it is up to the next administration of Joe Biden «to assess the situation and to see how it will position itself and work for a just and lasting solution».

The foreign minister revealed that the left-wing coalition government in Spain has «reached out» to the Biden team with the intention of «returning to multilateralism», adding that «there is no place to unilateralism in the management of international relations».
