The Spanish Salvamar Izar maritime rescue teams located and rescued on Sunday, January 14, a Moroccan migrant who was found near the coast of Fuerteventura, clinging to a truck tire.

The young man was found at around 1:30 p.m., floating on a large rubber wheel, Spanish media reported.

He told rescuers that he sailed from Tarfaya, a coastal town in southern Morocco, using a tire. The young man said he was accompanied by a friend who was working with him in Morocco, and who did not make it.

The migrant, who was suffering from hypothermia, received treatment at the port. Despite the perilous ordeal, he showed no further symptoms and stayed at the migrant center run by the Red Cross in Fuerteventura

News outlets labeled his journey a miraculous feat, adding that he may have started his journey tied to some type of larger ship. The other possibility they raise is that he may have been thrown off the boat because of his behavior or because there were too many people on the boat.
