Morocco reaffirmed its commitment to the Palestinian cause during the International Court of Justice (ICJ) hearing on the legal consequences of Israel's policies in occupied Palestinian territories.
Ambassador Mohamed Basri represented Morocco at the February 19-29 proceedings, joining the Palestinian delegation led by Foreign Minister Riyad Al Maliki during their oral presentation. This followed Morocco's written submission to the Court, emphasizing its role as chair of the Al-Quds Committee of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The plea underscored Morocco's dedication to protecting Jerusalem's unique status as a holy city for three monotheistic religions. It referenced the «Al-Quds/Jerusalem Appeal» signed by King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis, calling for preserving the city's multi-religious character and garantirng freedom of worship for all.
Morocco echoed the international consensus that Israeli settlements in occupied territories violate international law and jeopardize a viable two-state solution. The plea stressed the importance of dialogue and negotiation based on UN resolutions 242 and 338 for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
The statement highlighted King Mohammed VI's consistent advocacy for the Palestinian cause, both bilaterally and multilaterally, including within the UN and regional organizations like the Arab League and OIC. It concluded by reiterating the King's call for an end to the political deadlock and a return to peace negotiations.
