Local authorities in Nador province reported that eight people drowned in the Mediterranean Sea yesterday evening, Tuesday, while attempting to migrate irregularly.
Authorities explained today, Wednesday, that the victims were among a group of migrants who boarded a rubber boat in the Charana-Boumhfoud area of the Beni Sheker community, intending to cross the Mediterranean. The boat capsized due to bad weather conditions, including strong winds and high waves.
Local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie, the Royal Navy, and Civil Protection intervened. Nine people were rescued, and eight bodies were recovered. Search efforts continue for any possible missing persons.
An investigation has been opened by the relevant authorities under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecution to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
