Morocco rescued 29 people on Tuesday morning near Tarfaya, a Maritime Rescue spokesperson told Spanish news agency EFE.
The group, consisting of 26 people from sub-Saharan African countries and 3 from the Maghreb region, had initially contacted rescue services indicating they were approaching the east coast of Arrecife, a port city on the east coast of Lanzarote, one of Spain’s Canary Islands.
Salvamento Marítimo dispatched helicopters Helimer 202 and Guardamar Talía to the reported location, but they found it to be inaccurate. They then informed Moroccan rescue services, who conducted the successful rescue operation at 1:21 AM on Tuesday.
