The Polisario Front denounced the Dominican Republic's continued support for Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara on Sunday, August 18.

Mohamed Zrug, the Polisario's representative in the Caribbean, declared in a statement that «the Sahrawi people's legitimate right to self-determination is inalienable. Only the people of Western Sahara can decide their political future through a free and democratic process».

During a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Friday, Dominican President Luis Abinader reaffirmed his country's «firm support» for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and expressed plans to open a consulate in Dakhla.

The six members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines) opened a consular representation in Dakhla on March 31, 2022.
