The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan De Mistura, met on Thursday at the Tindouf camps with the Polisario head, Brahim Ghali.
De Mistura landed on the same day at the Tindouf airport. He then traveled to the Tindouf camps to meet with the Polisario leader.
During this meeting, attended by other Polisario members, the separatist movement «reiterated their position, which is firmly rooted in the principle of enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination as guaranteed by international laws and charters», reports pro-Polisario media.
After this meeting, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy also toured «institutions» belonging to the Polisario, including the headquarters of the Sahrawi Red Crescent.
This visit comes shortly after the UN envoy met with Mohamed Ammar, Polisario's coordinator for MINURSO, in New York on September 30. De Mistura also held separate meetings in New York with the foreign ministers of Morocco, Mauritania, and Algeria.
It is worth noting that De Mistura is expected to brief Security Council members on the Western Sahara situation on October 10.
