Princess Lalla Hasnaa, accompanied by Brigitte Macron, inaugurated the Royal Theater of Rabat on Tuesday. This landmark project strengthens the cultural ecosystem of Rabat, the «City of Light» and Morocco’s cultural capital.
After unveiling a commemorative plaque, Princess Lalla Hasnaa and Brigitte Macron attended a presentation on the theater’s interior architecture, followed by a tour of its facilities.
The theater’s location, aesthetic appeal, and cutting-edge technology mark a significant step forward in Morocco's cultural landscape.
Initiated by King Mohammed VI as part of Rabat’s development program, this large-scale project enhances cultural infrastructure across Morocco and elevates the country's global cultural stature.
The Royal Theater of Rabat, a symbol of modernity, introduces a contemporary touch to the capital's architecture, making it both a venue for artistic performances and a work of art in its own right.
Situated in the heart of the Bouregreg Valley, near the Hassan Tower and the Mohammed V Mausoleum, the Royal Theater of Rabat stands as a testament to the cultural and artistic renaissance of Morocco’s capital. It aims to reinvigorate Morocco's cultural scene, promoting a modernist approach to Moroccan art while fostering creativity.
Constructed by the Bouregreg Valley Development Agency and designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, the Royal Theater of Rabat spans 7.1 hectares, with 25,400 m² of built-up area. Its design harmonizes with the valley's natural dynamism and landscape.
The theater features thoughtfully distributed spaces, an innovative layout encouraging interaction among its components, and fluid audience mobility, with monumental staircases, passageways, elevators, and dedicated access for people with reduced mobility (PRM), embodying the principle of «mobility for all».
The main auditorium seats over 1,800 spectators and features a unique design with distinctive geometric walls and ceiling, enabling it to host a wide array of artistic and cultural events, including theater, dance, ballet, opera, musicals, and symphonic concerts.
Designed as a world-class facility, the auditorium’s acoustics meet the highest international insulation standards, with acoustic architecture ensuring an immersive sound experience for audiences. A removable ceiling acoustic reflector also serves as a central and unique feature.
A secondary, 250-seat auditorium supports diverse forms of cultural experimentation and expression, providing a platform for Morocco's emerging artistic scene.
The theater’s outdoor amphitheater, with a capacity of 7,000, is designed to host festivals and major events.
Through a vibrant program of national and international cultural events, the Royal Theater of Rabat offers an immersive cultural experience, enriching the cultural scene of Rabat and Morocco.
