A 21-year-old Moroccan student was shot dead by Canadian police last week in the city of Gatineau, Quebec, after he got into a fight with a policeman and stabbed him several times with a knife, according to local media.

The same sources said that the policeman was seriously injured and was hospitalized but is now out of danger.

Following the incident, the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) launched an investigation into the circumstances of the police intervention. The Quebec police will also conduct a parallel criminal investigation.

According to local media, the incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. after a 911 call was received about a person making disturbing remarks. When police arrived, a fight broke out between an officer and the individual. The officer sustained multiple stab wounds to the arms, shoulders, and neck.

Other officers then arrived and fired at the man, who was shot and wounded. Despite receiving first aid, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

SPVG Director Simon Fournier expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and acknowledged the emotional impact on police officers involved. He confirmed that the injured officer has been released from the hospital and a crisis unit has been set up to support affected personnel.
