Far from home, Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB) secured an important victory yesterday against the South African club Stellenbosch (1-3). In this match, part of the first day of the group stage of the African Confederation Cup, RSB wore a jersey emblazoned with the map of Morocco, including Western Sahara, sparking outrage in the Algerian media.
Last night, a commentator on the sports channel Al Haddaf denounced the CAF's decision to allow «RSB to play with the fictional map of Morocco, while the Moroccan players had not worn it during the preliminary round» last August against the Beninese team Dadjè. As a reminder, it was in November that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) gave its green light to Berkane's jersey which features the complete map of the kingdom.
Algeria has two clubs engaged in the group stage of the CAF Cup 2024-2025: USMA and CS Constantine, respectively placed in groups A and C, while RS Berkane is in group B. A Moroccan-Algerian duel could take place during the semi-finals, as last season with a CAF verdict favorable to the Berkanis.
