The General Delegation for Prison and Reintegration Administration has reported a total of 41 measles cases across several prison facilities in Morocco as of Wednesday.

The distribution of these cases is as follows: 23 cases at Tangier 2 local prison, which includes two staff members, seven cases at Mohammedia local prison, five at Ain Borja local prison, two cases each at Kenitra central prison and Bourkaize local prison in Fez, and one case each at Tetouan local prison and Qalaa El Saraghna local prison, according to an official statement.

The General Delegation has urged prisoners' families and relatives who are permitted to visit to be mindful of the situation's seriousness. They are advised to adhere to preventive measures and avoid visiting if they exhibit any symptoms of infection, to prevent the disease's transmission to inmates.

«In line with its communication strategy and the operational plan crafted by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to curb the risk of a measles outbreak, the General Delegation has implemented all preventive and therapeutic measures outlined in the health protocol developed by the Ministry», the statement emphasized. These measures were enacted immediately after measles symptoms were identified among new arrivals at certain prison institutions.

The General Delegation has isolated symptomatic cases from other inmates to conduct necessary examinations and laboratory tests, providing treatments as per the protocol. This is being done in coordination with competent health departments, while also facilitating voluntary vaccination for prisoners and staff by medical personnel.

To enhance vigilance and caution, an organizational memorandum was circulated on January 3, 2025, to all prison institutions. It urged administrations to implement necessary preventive and therapeutic measures if any signs of infection arise among prisoners, employees, or visitors, and to coordinate with relevant health services, the statement concluded.
