The handicraft sector in Morocco is a significant contributor to the national economy, generating an impressive annual turnover of 140 billion dirhams and accounting for 7% of the country's gross domestic product. This was highlighted during a recent meeting in Fez, presided over by the Secretary of State for Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Lahcen Saadi.
During the meeting, detailed data was presented by Abderrahim Belkhayat, the regional director of handicrafts in Fez. He revealed that the sector's turnover is divided into 96.3 billion dirhams from production crafts and 43.7 billion dirhams from service crafts. The sector is comprised of 275,000 craft units and 2,063 companies nationwide.
Belkhayat also noted a positive trend in exports, which reached nearly 1.11 billion dirhams in 2024, marking a 3% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 251 craftsmen across the nation have been awarded quality labels, recognizing their excellence and craftsmanship.
Focusing on the Fez-Meknes region, Belkhayat highlighted that the handicraft sector employs over 144,000 artisans in artistic and productive crafts. The region hosts 44,000 craft units, representing about 16% of the total production units in Morocco.
Regionally, the sector achieves a turnover of approximately 10.6 billion dirhams, contributing nearly 11% to the national turnover in production crafts and services. Exports from the Fez-Meknes region alone amounted to 143 million dirhams. The region also boasts 641 craftsmen with quality labels, accounting for 25% of the national total, and 525 companies, which constitute 23% of the sector's companies nationwide.
