In Spain, certain groups are working to bring Aminatou Haidar back into the media and political spotlight. A Malaga-based production company has announced plans to make a documentary about the Sahrawi activist, reported a Spanish newspaper on Tuesday, March 11. The film will be financed through crowdfunding, with a donation campaign already launched on social media by the project’s initiators.
«The goal of the campaign is to raise a minimum of 15,000 euros in 40 days. This amount will cover part of the production costs, including travel, interviews, and previously unseen audiovisual archives», the same source stated.
The documentary will focus, in particular, on Aminatou Haidar’s expulsion from Laayoune to the Canary Islands by Moroccan authorities in November 2009.
Excluded by the current Polisario leadership, Haidar has previously received support from certain Spanish circles to regain visibility. This was the case in November 2018 when she was invited to a conference of pro-Polisario European associations in Madrid. The documentary, in which she will play the central role, could also serve as a means to break this isolation.
