The Malian army has decided to reinforce its positions along the border with Algeria. «The decision was made on Monday evening following an emergency meeting of the transitional government», a source familiar with the matter told Yabiladi.

The increased deployment of Malian troops—already stationed near the Algerian border—comes amid mounting tensions between Algiers and Bamako. Mali accuses the Algerian army of shooting down one of its drones inside Malian territory.

On Monday, Algiers announced a ban on «any overflight of its territory by aircraft and aerial vehicles coming from or headed to Mali». In response, Mali’s transitional government quickly adopted a reciprocal measure. To avoid armed escalation, Russia is now attempting to mediate between the two countries.

Amid this heightened tension, protesters gathered outside the Algerian embassy in Bamako on Tuesday, April 8, denouncing what they describe as Algerian interference in Mali’s internal affairs.

In a show of solidarity, Niger and Burkina Faso—Mali’s allies in the Confederation of Sahel States—have recalled their ambassadors from Algiers for consultations.
