The Association of Algerian Muslim Scholars issued a call for unity yesterday in response to any attempts to destabilize the country. Following its meeting on Saturday, April 12, the executive bureau of this religious body, founded in 1931 and linked to the established power since 1962, warned in alarmist tones that «Algeria is the target of hostile intentions from enemy forces», without specifying their identity. Typically, the term «enemy forces» refers to Morocco.

The religious organization urged «Algerians to remain vigilant and support state institutions to preserve the nation’s foundations and protect its borders». It also «denounced certain voices connected to the colonial legacy, which seek to sow discord in the country».

The statement concluded with support for the creation of a commission tasked with drafting a bill to criminalize French colonization, a topic often highlighted by Algerian authorities when relations with Paris become strained.

This stance by Algerian religious figures was preceded by similar condemnations from local parties, such as the National Liberation Front and the National Democratic Rally, against the transitional government in Mali.
