Morocco’s Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, announced on Tuesday in Rabat that 1,239 mosques damaged by the Al Haouz earthquake have so far been reopened for worshippers, out of a total of 2,217 affected.

Speaking at a religious ceremony marking «Mosques Day», Toufiq explained that «as part of the program to rehabilitate religious and endowment buildings damaged by the Al Haouz earthquake, 1,239 mosques have now reopened thanks to the stability of their structures or after restoration, either by the ministry or with the support of benefactors».

The minister highlighted that work is underway on the wider rehabilitation program covering 2,516 religious and endowment buildings in total, including 2,217 mosques and 299 zawiyas and mausoleums. The cost of this program has been estimated at 1.2 billion dirhams.

Toufiq also noted that the ministry is committed to upgrading all mosques and improving the quality of worship spaces across the Kingdom. To date, 2,057 previously closed mosques have been reopened, while 533 are still undergoing repairs.

He added that 4,664 structural assessment studies have been completed, with rehabilitation works currently in progress on 754 mosques, zawiyas, and mausoleums. Work is scheduled to begin on 530 additional buildings before the end of this year, followed by another 1,225 at the start of next year. The rehabilitation of all mosques, zawiyas, and mausoleums is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

It is worth recalling that since 2007, «Mosques Day» has been observed annually on the seventh day following the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday. The occasion features extensive regional and local activities related to mosques, particularly their construction, renovation, furnishing, and maintenance, as well as a variety of religious and cultural programs.
