One of the primary suspects in the infamous drug smuggling tunnel case, found between Ceuta and Morocco, has been released on bail. The suspect, who is the brother of Ceuta Assembly member Mohamed Ali Duas, was granted freedom after posting a 20,000-euro bail. This decision was rendered by the Spanish National Court, which partially accepted his defense's plea on humanitarian and health grounds.

Judicial sources quoted by La Razón revealed that the defense argued his continued detention posed a serious health risk due to thyroid problems requiring urgent endocrinological care, a service unavailable within the prison.

The suspect was apprehended on February 2 during Operation «Hades», led by the Spanish Civil Guard. This operation uncovered a tunnel connecting Ceuta to Morocco, believed to be used for smuggling hashish to Algeciras in trucks with hidden compartments.

The judges, in their ruling, highlighted that the investigation indicates the operation of a criminal network functioning «with a high degree of immunity», allegedly aided by Civil Guard members at the Port of Ceuta who allowed drug-laden trucks to pass unchecked.

Despite compelling evidence of his involvement, the court assessed that the risk of flight had decreased after eight months in custody. They pointed to his established life in Spain and family ties as factors reducing his likelihood of fleeing.

As part of the release conditions, the suspect must report to the court twice monthly, on the first and fifteenth. Meanwhile, his brother, Mohamed Ali Duas, remains detained in connection with the same investigation.

Medical evaluations reported a weight loss of approximately eight kilograms since his arrest, influencing the court's decision to grant temporary release based on his health status.
