On Tuesday, October 21, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf had a phone conversation, «at his initiative», with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, focusing on the Western Sahara issue.

According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the discussions centered on the UN Security Council's agenda under Russia's presidency in October, with particular emphasis on the Western Sahara resolution process.

The Russian diplomatic service noted that Lavrov and Attaf «welcomed the high level of trust in their political dialogue and the robust nature of bilateral relations, which are rooted in close cooperation within international bodies, especially the United Nations.» The ministers also explored avenues to «further strengthen the deep strategic partnership» between their nations.

Meanwhile, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a brief statement confirming the phone call between Ahmed Attaf and Sergey Lavrov, but did not delve into specifics.

This conversation follows just five days after Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita's official visit to Moscow. On October 17, Morocco and Russia signed a new fishing agreement, which notably includes the waters off the Sahara.

Algeria is reportedly aiming to convince Moscow to veto the upcoming United Nations Security Council resolution, which is anticipated to endorse Morocco's autonomy plan concerning its sovereignty over the Sahara.
