As the European Parliament debated a draft resolution on Wednesday calling for the suspension of labeling agricultural products from the Sahara, members of a French farmers’ union blockaded an Azura logistics hub in Perpignan.
The action was organized by the Confédération paysanne, a union known for its proximity to Polisario positions. In a statement, it said the blockade was meant to «denounce the unfair competition facing European Union producers and the violation of Sahrawi rights».
Union activists later targeted a shop selling cherry tomatoes sourced from the Sahara. They forcibly removed several packs and delivered them to the French customs office in Perpignan.
The Confédération paysanne is no stranger to such actions. In October 2024, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in its favor in a case it brought in 2023 demanding that tomatoes and melons from the Sahara be explicitly labeled.
The Azura group has long been in the crosshairs of Europe-based associations aligned with the Polisario. On November 2, two days after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2797, the company issued a statement paying tribute «to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God Glorify Him, after a historic day for Our National Cause», describing the Sahara conflict as «artificial» and reaffirming «Morocco’s territorial integrity».
