The «EF English Proficiency Index», renowned for evaluating countries where English is not the native language, has ranked Morocco 68th out of 123 nations and regions, with a score of 492 out of 1000. This marks an improvement from last year's position, where Morocco was placed 76th.
The index classifies countries into five proficiency levels: "Very High", "High", "Moderate", "Low", and "Very Low". Morocco finds itself in the "Low" category, indicating a need for improvement in English language skills.
In the African context, Morocco ranks ninth, trailing behind South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Tunisia.
Examining English proficiency by city, Rabat leads with 517 points, followed closely by Fes at 515 points, Benguerir also at 515, Marrakech with 512, Tangier at 510, and Safi rounding out the list with 505 points.
Regionally, Fes-Meknes tops the chart with an average score of 502 points, followed by Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima with 500 points, Rabat-Salé-Kénitra at 499, Marrakech-Safi at 495, Casablanca-Settat at 494, and Souss-Massa with 484 points.
In terms of gender differences, men scored higher than women, with averages of 497 and 487 points respectively. The report also indicates that individuals aged 21 to 25 are the most proficient in English, while those over 41 lag behind.
The Most Widely Spoken Common Language in the World
Globally, the Netherlands holds the top spot, followed by Croatia, Austria, and Germany, with Norway in fifth place. Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, and Slovakia complete the top ten. At the other end of the spectrum, Togo, Libya, Ivory Coast, and Cambodia are ranked lowest.
This year's index is based on data from 2.2 million candidates who took the EF SET test in 2024. Notably, for the first time, the index includes assessments of speaking and writing skills, offering a more comprehensive view of English proficiency than previous editions.
Prior to 2024, the EF SET test focused solely on receptive skills such as reading and listening. However, new sections were introduced in early 2024 to evaluate productive skills, namely writing and speaking.
The report underscores that English remains the most widely spoken common language for international communication. Despite global tensions and uncertainties, the necessity of a shared language in a globalized world is undeniable. The demand for English courses and language programs continues unabated, as do corporate and governmental investments in enhancing English proficiency, although progress in this area is somewhat stagnant.
