Safi flash floods : Death toll rises to 21, dozens rescued
DR

The death toll in Safi has climbed to 21, and 32 people have been rescued, according to an update from local authorities on Sunday evening, December 14, after exceptionally intense thunderstorms triggered sudden flash floods across the province.

The victims were swept away by powerful torrents that flooded homes and commercial shops. The injured were transported to Mohammed V Hospital. Most have received treatment and been discharged, while the remaining patients remain under medical supervision, authorities said.

The floods caused major material damage across Safi, particularly in the old medina. An initial assessment found that rainwater inundated around 70 homes and shops in areas such as Bir Anzarane Street and Sidi Boudhab Square. Around ten vehicles were swept away, and the road connecting Safi to the Hrara rural commune sustained damages, while several routes within the city were closed to traffic.

Videos shared online showed cars being carried off by the floods and homes almost completely submerged under rainwater.

Search efforts are still underway to locate any missing persons and restore road access and essential services.
