Inmates in Morocco’s prisons will be allowed to receive food baskets on a one-time basis starting from the second day of Eid al-Fitr, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced.
The measure follows a decision by the DGAPR to exclude religious holidays from the ongoing ban on food baskets, citing their positive psychological impact on inmates and their role in strengthening family ties, according to a statement.
Under this exception, inmates will be permitted to receive food baskets from authorized relatives, as well as from diplomatic and consular representatives for foreign detainees. The distribution will take place once, according to a schedule set by each prison administration, the statement added.
The DGAPR also assured that inmates will be given the necessary means to contact their families and inform them of the conditions for bringing in food baskets.
It warned that any failure by families to comply with the established rules would result in immediate legal action, including referral to the competent prosecutors.
In addition, the delegation noted that a special and diversified meal program adapted to the holy month has been implemented across all penitentiary institutions.
