El Jadida: 10-meter sinkhole suddenly appears
DR

A sinkhole estimated at around 10 meters deep suddenly appeared on Sunday in the village of Oulad Abbou, in the province of El Jadida, raising concern among local residents.

The collapse occurred at the «Sha’noun» basin, fed by the Flifel River, which flows through the Doukkala and Rehamna regions. According to local residents, the sinkhole formed abruptly as water levels in the basin had been steadily receding in recent days.

Alarmed by the development, residents are calling on local and regional authorities to intervene urgently by dispatching a specialized technical team to determine the causes of the collapse and assess any potential risks to the surrounding population.

A sinkhole is a geological phenomenon in which the ground surface collapses, either suddenly or gradually, due to the presence of underground voids. These cavities often result from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone by water, or from soil erosion caused by infiltration.

Over time, the surface becomes unstable and can give way, creating a potentially dangerous cavity. Such events may also be linked to declining groundwater levels or human activities, including drilling and the overexploitation of water resources.
