«In response to the offensive launched by rebel and jihadist groups in Mali since April 25, 2026, Rabat has activated Royal Air Maroc (RAM) to assist in the evacuation of foreign nationals», reports Africa Intelligence on Monday, May 4.
Despite the escalating crisis, RAM has kept its daily flights between Casablanca and Bamako operational, even deploying «a larger capacity aircraft» to accommodate the urgent demand.
As other airlines, including Corsair and Air Algérie, have halted their services to the Malian capital, the Moroccan carrier has successfully maintained a «strategic air bridge with Mali», the same source notes. This positions Casablanca as a vital transit point for Europeans and other foreigners eager to leave the country swiftly.
Last week, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised French citizens residing in Mali to «arrange a temporary departure as soon as possible via the still available commercial flights».
Since April 25, the Malian government has been under siege from coordinated attacks by separatists of the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) and the Islamists of the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), led by Iyad Ag Ghaly. These groups reportedly have backing from Algeria.
RAM's engagement in Mali highlights the airline's ongoing dedication to Africa, reminiscent of its actions during the Ebola epidemic when it was the only airline to continue flights to the affected countries.
