The mayor of Algeciras, Spain, José Ignacio Landaluce, has warned of severe traffic congestion expected in the region during the upcoming Marhaba 2026 operation, scheduled from June 5 to September 15. This comes amidst the continued suspension of train services and increasing pressure on the roads leading to the southern Spanish ports.

In a memo issued by the city council, the mayor explained that the suspension of rail transport for about a year and a half will result in a significant portion of freight traffic being diverted to the A-7 highway. This highway is already suffering from congestion beyond its capacity, which could further complicate travel during the summer crossing period.

He noted that the A-7 highway frequently experiences accidents and traffic jams, urging authorities to expedite the completion of the third lane project, especially with the anticipated increase in trucks and vehicles coinciding with the Marhaba operation. This operation sees a large influx of Moroccan travelers heading to the transit ports en route to Morocco each year.

He also pointed out that the N-340 national road, connecting Algeciras and Tarifa, continues to experience traffic disruptions following the damage caused by recent storms.
