A 28-year-old Moroccan man died Sunday night after being struck by a regional train while crossing railway tracks near the station of Fossalta di Piave, near Venice, according to Italian media reports.

The victim was hit around 11 p.m. by a train traveling from Venice to Trieste after reportedly attempting to cross the tracks on foot.

Despite the driver applying emergency brakes as soon as the man became visible, the train struck him head-on, leaving him no chance of survival.

The incident caused major disruptions to rail traffic for several hours as authorities carried out investigations and recovered the body.

Italy’s railway police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy using surveillance footage from cameras monitoring the railway line. While investigators initially explored all possibilities, including suicide, they are now leaning toward the theory of a fatal accident caused by a reckless attempt to cross the tracks.
